ESPN has UT as favorite to win B12?

0 like 0 dislike
Not saying that it couldn't happen, our boys should be much improved. I'm wondering if there is something else happening at OU that we don't know yet. They should be favored walking into the season.
I'm not a subscriber so....can anyone submit a tidbit or 2?

Better not be ESPN just trying to hype us up for LHN reasons. blackeye

I'm sure it's less a matter of "ESPN" having Texas as the favorite and more a matter of one of their "Insider" writers, KC Joyner, picking Texas as the favorite. The idea that one columnist picking Texas to win the conference isn't that shocking. It's a matter of whether you think the QB situation will come together and how much you value defense in a strong offensive league. I'm sure that there are probably several ESPN writers who think OU is favorite, as well as a few here or there that think TCU, WVU, or other teams may be.

So far, since the Big 12 schedules were released, I've seen 3 writers make actual game-by-game predictions. 2 have us going 10-2 (Bohls and the guys at CFN) and one has us going 9-3 (Golden).

The CFN guys have us losing to OU and then being upset in Lubbock.

Bohls has us beating OU but losing to WVU and at K-State.

Golden has us losing to both of the Oklahoma schools and then at K-State.

I think 9-3 or 10-2 before bowl games sounds pretty good. If our offense is good enough to pull that off it should set up a really exciting 2013...

Texas has great athletes and has the potential to win the Big XII, but the writer of this article forgot to take their QB play into consideration. OU is the more appealing candidate to be the preseason favorite to win the conference for many reasons.

Texas had great athletes the last 2 seasons how did that work out for you? whats funny to me is ESPIN has Texas rated at 15th and OU at 5th but some how ESPIN has Texas winning the big 12 go figure. lol

our offense last season was good enough to win 9 or 10 games before our 3 best running backs all went down at the same time. so yeah, our offense is going to at the very least be good enough for that next year.

if texas doesn't win 10 games next year(before the bowl game), it's going to be a disappointing year.

I would put absolutely zero stock in anything KC Joyner said. Same guy said not only should the Carolina Panthers not draft Cam Newton with the first pick in last years NFL draft, but it would be a mistake for any NFL team to draft Cam Newton in the entire first round. The Panthers obviously did draft Cam and he had maybe the best season of any rookie in the history of the NFL

Well lets see, UT will lose to WVU, TCU, OU, KSU, So if UT has 5 ooc games then they will have a 10 win season. BTW who is UT's ooc games next season?

I picked OU to be in the National Championship game last year. Im just not sold on Bob's teams anymore. Picking preseason winners in Big 12 football is a complete gamble.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Texas wins the B12 next season. However, it's pretty farfetched to call them the favorite at this point. OU should be the favorite in everyones eyes except for Longhorn fans.

chOKelahomo has always had an edge when it comes to close matchups or polls. They have the small-man envy complex and a better PR man than most, including Texas. ESPN is probably the first to recognize it.

Re: OU the favorite. Maybe 55-17 and L. Jones has something to do with it.

Even E-Spin's propaganda wont help UT next year, they have 2 chances on winning the Big 12....maybe the year after?

We have the Sooners in the HOUSE!

Not sure what is your point here. chOKelahoma also regularly beats the dog out of Texas. In any given year, sight unseen, it would be a good bet to pick OU to win the conference.

So tell me why anyone outside of a Texas fan would pick UT to win any of the games I listed UT will lose?

3 of the 4 games are at home and the other is a rivalry game...?

TCU has some serious problems...?
WVU has to play a tough schedule for the first time in a while...?

Just a few reasons why "someone outside" of a Texas fan would pick UT to win...

Polls Really makes no difference. We all know that. ESPN has picked ou to win MNC, as usual they crash and burn. Stil believe 'Horns are a year away.

First, I was just pointing out that you made a definitive prediction there.

Second, there's a big difference between saying a team "won't be favored" and a team "will lose" a game.

Third, why would anyone outside of Texas fans pick us to win those games? Why are you asking me? I'm a Longhorn fan. But here are some people you could ask: so far, at least 1 ESPN columnist (see OP), Cedric Golden and Kirk Bowls of the AAS (journalists, but I don't know if they count as fans or not), and the guys who do CFN's site (see the link).

I'm not saying we will be favored in any or most of those, but I do think we're going to enter this season better than we entered last season and I think that, yeah, most of the games you listed fit into that category of "could go either way" which means that it's fair to say that I think UT has a decent chance of winning some of them.

Anyway, like I said, I was just hoping someone noted that you said we "will not" win any of those so that at some point it might be able to be brought back up when it's time to congratulate you for your perfect prediction. Smile

Because there are some people outside of Texas fans that understand the laws of probability.

If Texas has a only a 25% chance of winning each of those games.
Then the chance of Texas winning at least one of those five games is 87.3%

Therefore it is a safe bet to pick UT to win at least one of these games.

Last year was OU's team to run the table. I just don't see them having the squad to do that again with the guys they lose. And leadership I hear is a huge problem in Norman right now.

This guy was all over A&M last off-season. He is a contrarian. That's his angle to get his name out there. I see his headlines and intros on ESPN.com but I no longer have the desire to read further via the Insider subscription.

Oklahoma has a good ratio of Big 12 titles in the Stoops era and an experienced starter at QB and a solid OL. Kenny Stills needs to step up or move over for the youngsters. Need more production at RB even if it's by committee.

Last year was a disappointment as the team fell apart due to complacency, lack of chemistry and injury. I thought it was Stoops' worst coaching job of his tenure. He also felt changes needed as he sent Martinez packing and knew the risk of losing Venables by bringing Mike back. Bob had never ushered one of his assistants out the door until this off-season.
