Not that the rankings matter in the slightest, but it's good to get recognition.

But of course they do matter in more than the slightest ... for recognition and for post-season.

If you want highlights on ESPN, capsules in USA Today, and attention on national radio shows, being ranked matters.

They matter absolutely zero for the post season.

If you want highlights and recognition, just keep winning...

For proof that rankings don't matter in the post season just look at Murray St. They're ranked #12 right now. Do you really think they'll get a 3 seed? Not even close. The bracket committee absolutely does not take polls into consideration when determining the seeds.

If you do not believe that publicity and public perception is important, then why are Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow already in their respective Hall of Fames?

The fact is that your scores are scrolled on ESPN and your team highlights make it on Sportscenter when you are ranked. That is publicity.

Never said that publicity and public perception aren't important. I said for the purposes of the post season in college basketball polls are not important. The ONLY reason polls are important are for public perception, which is nice.

I think that the talking heads and so-called experts can have some sort of influence on the committee. And the talking heads are only talking about you if you are visible in the public eye. It is cyclical. In my opinion, FSU had its bubble burst more than once due to the fact that they remained outside of the public eye for much of the season.

I do agree that the committee will not take a copy of the top-25 into the war room to determine seedings.

Except on College Gameday.

I think their point is that public perception has a direct impact on seeding. I think that's a pretty fair assumption. We are talking about humans (members of the public) sitting in a room and ranking teams. No matter how much they use "numbers" to justify putting certain teams in certain seeds, it always comes down to a judgement call.

You want proof polls don't matter, compare the publicity FSU would get if:

1. We go on to win our next 4 games and end the season ranked Top 10, then go on and lose the first games in each the ACCT and NCAAT.

2. Lose 2 or 3 of the next 4 games and end the season barely ranked to unranked. They go on to win the 3 or 4 games in the NCAAT.

The polls, RPI, SOS, signature wins, bad losses, road wins, etc., plus the personal and conference biases of the selection committee members, all factor into selection and seeding. Polls may not be a major factor, but the constant TV exposure from having our game highlights on because we are ranked builds familiarity with committee members.

More importantly, the exposure from being in the top 25 is great for recruiting, building a bigger fan base, merchandise sales (= $$$), not to mention we fans get to see our team on Sportscenter.
