We are going to get shafted Thursday

With all the crying from Duke fans (coach K in particular) and the way things went down in Raleigh this weekend I am expected the refs to call every touch foul on us against Duke. You better believe Coach K will be in the refs ears pre-game warning about our aggressive defense. I'm certain that the league is hearing plenty from NCSt about the events that happened in that game. I'm sure one of the complaints from their side will be about the physical style of defense we play and how that contributed to certain NCSt fan's dissatisfaction with the way the officials called the game (and thus caused their ejection). I'm expecting the conference to issue some unwritten mandate to crack down on physical play this game. Even more so if it gives their favorite Dukies a better chance of pulling off the victory. Lord knows the conference would not like for the season ending epic battle between UNC and Duke to be a battle for 2nd place.

The officials called it tight on us for most of the NCSU game and it didn't matter at all.

The game is still 3 days away and there's already whining about officiating...

We deal with the "loose" whistle versus duke/unc every time we play them, this game will be no different...

As long as we have one more point than Duke at the end of the game I don't care how it is called.

Just because two former NC State players with obvious "feelings of entitlement" got the boot from their seats should have no bearing on how the game will be called. I am pretty sure that right around the first media timeout of the game Saturday, the foul count was FSU - 5 NC State - 0. They shot 18 free throws in the first half to our 4. Things were much more fairly called in the second half... they still ended up with 10 more free throws and 3 fewer fouls called than we did. Seems like they were upset that we weren't getting the same non-Tobacco road treatment in the 2nd half that we did in the first. They wanted the free throw count to be 36-8 and the foul count to be 28-12. The ACC I'm sure remembers the national embarrassment that the officiating for our game at Duke caused a few years ago. I trust it will be down the middle this week unless the officials just have a bad game. I am hoping for a crew that includes Les Jones and Ted Valentine... Coach K won't have an ounce of influence on either of them! Just no Hess, Ayers, Eades, or Natili please.

From what I remember, this year's game in Durham was fairly called.

I understand that it's not the norm; the officiating in Durham in 2009 was absolutely horrendous. But I'm going to echo a previous poster's sentiments: to complain three days before something actually happens is a little ridiculous.

Just b/c a team shoots more FTs than the other, doesn't mean that the game was called unfairly...

Just means that one team fouled more...

I like the "is the game going to be on TV" threads better.

In regards to the first half of the game @ NC State, you can't watch that and then repeat what you said with a straight face. The second half WAS called fairly, maybe even a slight lean towards us, but the first half was clearly called differently on each end of the court.

NC State shot more fouls shots and Dulkys was called for a 3 shot foul on the particular play in question. The officials missed a few calls in both directions. Hopefully, they will not play a crucial role in the outcome.

We just need to have plans for how to play depending on how the refs call the game.

If they call ticky tacky fouls and we have to lay off, then we need to run Duke into the ground in transition.

If they allow the game to be physical, we need to smother them on defense, force the ball into the paint on offense (inside-out game)and wear them down.

Beat the hell out the Dukies. Our frustration had a lot to do with the game at Duke. Fouling out three of our starters to no one on their side. If the refs would ever call the Plumlees for over the back rebounding, and forearms in the opposing players back to clear them out when rebounding, no one would have ever heard of them. Throwing out our fans when no profanity was used, and hearing the F-Bombs Coach K continually throws out is as big a double standard as I've ever seen. Different rules for different teams.

The acc front office wants duke. It will be five vs six out there. We will need to be ten points better just to win by one.

We need to bait the Rat to keep him on the bench with stomach cramps, play our control game within our system, make them play Defense and play within our abilities and the Rat will be livid and in pain.

Forget the refs, we need to focus on executing on offense, keep feeding the ball down low and our normal aggressive defensive focus going and things will turn out well.

I hope White has a better game this time out . .. they have no one that can match up with him if he stays aggressive.

We also need to make Rivers play some defense. He recorded 0 fouls last game and we all know that's B.S. so whomever he guards, I hope they really take it to him.

The refs will be the refs, but with our crowd and defense they will wilt under the pressure!

I really don't think so.

After what happened @ NCST and the importance of this game;
I would expect a fairly called game. Unlike some on here, I don't
buy into that the reffs are out to screw us. IMO; that is just
unfounded paranoia. Again looking for a reason to lose, instead of finding reasons that we will win.

Some calls will go against us, thats for sure. Some calls will work for us, thats for sure. We have to adjust to the way the game is called. Something we did not do a good job of @ NCST! At least not in the first half.

The BS charge calls almost cost us the game in Durham. I have a lot of respect for Duke, and really like Coach K, but the calls they get are ridiculous.

That said, if we were in this position and UNC had 3 ACC losses, I think this game would be called evenly... but the ACC wants Duke-UNC to have as much attention as possible. They want that game to determine the #1 seed and I think that will affect how the refs call the game.

On the other hand, the ACC has to believe we'll lose a game after we play Duke thus leaving a door open for the same UNC-Duke matchup mentioned above if we were to drop 2. UVA on the road they likely assume will be a loss, and on the road at Miami the ACC knows they can adjust on the fly. The game could potentially be called fairly, but I have serious doubts. They won't determine the outcome, but they'll have a hand in it if it's close. Gotta push the ball and throw as many bodies at them as possible. If we're physical early (Gibson), we'll be able to tell how much we can pressure.

I've never believed the conspiracy theories, but I do believe Duke and UNC get the benefit of the doubt--much like all good teams and players tend to. Refs tend to call what they expect should happen rather than what they actually saw a little more often when it comes to those teams. It's more human nature than anything nefarious, in my opinion.

This I agree with 100%
That being said, we are now one of the good teams!

To think that there are conspiracy reffs that are told to let UNC, Duke win is laughable at best, but I think it's down right foolish!

I too, doubt that the refs are out to get FSU.

However, I do think their one-sidedness in many games is beyond incompetence. I think they put money on games.

I didn't specifically reference any game, just commenting that taking FT attempts for each team doesn't necessarily correlate to even-ness of officiating...

no way do i think the refs can afford to "blantly" favor duke thursday night ... far too much spot-light on the refs for them to do anything that brings more negative attention ...

and i still can't buy into the conspiracy theory that everyone hates us ... talk about paranoia, you should read some of the carolina board comments ...

If they're calling it tight that might favor us. Duke only has one guy who can get to the rim in Rivers. Mason Plumlee is really the only guy down low who can create his own offense. They are a jump shooting team primarily as they always are. Send Snaer and Miller to the rim and pound it in to James and Gibson if the refs are whistle happy. We are just as talented as this Duke team, us winning wont be he "upset" it normally is.

Okay, I agree with that. But my response was due to the fact that my initial comments that you referenced was directly regarding discussion of the NC State game, the first half in particular.

The ACC front office are UNC alums. Why would they be pulling for Duke?

Yep. I don't see why the NCSU gae would lead to unfair calls against FSU, makes no sense. If anything . . .

. . . but most likely nothing about NCSU/FSU game will impact the Duke/FSU game. Different night, different teams, different refs.

Excellent post. Hopefully the refs will be consistent.
