@texashsfootball: Dallas Jesuit's J.J. Gustafson becomes the 24th #txhsfb 2013 commit and 14th to an SEC school

I thought all the "smarter than the rest" of this board had assured us that no Fab-55 players would be interested in attending A&M to play in the SEC. Pffff!

you would have to look at how many kids went to the sec the last few years compared to this recruiting class. If the aggs get raped this year and look bad on the field, then you can see as many de-commits with this class as last years class.

Sorry but we have scholarship limits of 25 per year, so no we can't get them all.

rollLike the Circle of Life; the Circle of Aggie will soon be in full effect. De-commit season is right around the corner. How does it go again?

Full recruiting class early - getting everyone they want and UT is getting terrible players.
Decommits late; Ags still say they got who they wanted and the others suck anyways
Preseason - "We have a shat at a NC"
Lose 1st game - We still can play in NC if we win out
Lose 2nd game - We can win the conference and play in a BCS game if we just win the rest of the games
Lose 3rd game - QB sucks; we should look to the future. Its bright got good recruits coming in.
Lose 4th game - Players arent buying in to the coach, time to play all the young ones. Next year is our year.
Repeat each season for 3 years; then hire a new coach.

Don't worry Scholz-zee, you can always use your ever-present "we never offered him" excuse.

False, troll. We would've offered Gustafson, Wilson and Golden for sure had they made it to Austin.

But since you bring it up, we did beat aggy 18:1 head to head in the past class.

No one said "no kids would play for ATM". Just that it wouldn't tip the scales of the recruiting balance in their favor like they think it magically will. They always get a number of fab55 kids......Texas can't offer 55 scholarships every year.

For the record ATM has averaged around a 13th class finish since the inception of rivals recruiting rankings. And that is with a horrible outlier year in the 40s once. Yet they never translate that to a top13 season. They rarely made the top25. And they actually averaged a 6th place finish in the BigXII since its inception. So they better do much better in recruiting to hope to finish more than middle of the pack in the SEC. But neither will happen.

Truth is, they will get a kid or two that they wouldn't have gotten thanks to the SEC. And a kid or two will not bother looking at them because they want to play near home. This is already happening. But if you think they are just going to move to the SEC and take kids that grew up wanting to play for UT or steal kids from Bama, UF, Arky, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, etc that grew up in TX wanting to play in SEC.....well keep dreaming. Losing in the SEC will take a much bigger toll on their recruiting than the initial prestige bump will gain them.

gustafson's parents and grandfather went to the school. That is someone you should be able to recruit successfully. So far, it looks like a .500 record on legacies.

So the troll is finally flying his colors. Too embarrassed to admit he was an aggie so he has been saying he was a Notre Dame fan for years. Pathetic. If you're too much of a coward to claim your own team then what kind of fan are you. The kind that hates Texas more than he loves his own school is my guess.

Offensive tackle Kent Perkins is a lock to be offered by the Longhorns at the Feb. 25 junior day.

This morning, however, we take a look at only the key prospects scheduled to be on hand.

Lock for an Offer
Kent Perkins - Offensive tackle, Richardson Lake Highlands, 6-5/295

Perkins essentially has a verbal offer at this point, and only needs to make the trip Saturday to make it official. The Longhorns have been, and remain, the team to beat.

On the Cusp
Jacorey Warrick - Athlete, Cypress Falls, 6-0/175
Deoundrei Davis - Outside linebacker, Cypress Woods, 6-3/205
Torrodney Prevot - Defensive end, Alief Taylor, 6-4/210
Robbie Rhodes - Wide receiver, Fort Worth Southwest, 6-0/185

Warrick is a guy that Texas really likes, and could see as more than just an outside receiver. Track obligations could be an issue with the 6-foot-0, 175-pounder

I love the part about the ATM staff selling TE Smyth on playing the Y position. I hope the ags were paying attention....you know the ones that posted about a big WR like Oliver not fitting in that offense. Apparently their staff disagrees as they are trying to sell a bigger and slower TE on slotting out as a flex WR in their system.

Is that similar to the "not SEC good" excuse for kids Stoops, Saban, Miles, Chizik, and Meyer offered (Swoopes, RSJ, Rauleron)?

Or is it more like the "soft offer/noncommittable offer" excuses?

not a junior day guy, but i do not want to star another thread

This OOS blue-chipper, ranked #14 overall in the nation, has reached out to Texas and spoke with Darrell Wyatt recently, per OrangeBloods:

DE, Joey Bosa, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) (6-5, 260)
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/footbal...ey-Bosa-129378

Things are just beginning but Texas is supposed to look at his film soon and proceed from there. He said if UT decides to offer, he "will be visiting soon." He currently favors Alabama and Wisconsin.

Or, he could just pretend to be a fan of a school while only bad mouthing the school and its fans?

BTW, Texas didn't offer. That isn't an excuse. It is a fact.

24/7 reporting the staff has informed QB JT Barrett that UT will be going with only one QB in 2013 for the time being. He will not be attending JD2 this weekend.

Everyone at Aquinas is a b** a** m*****f*****. If we established any kind of a pipeline there, it would almost be unfair.

"24/7 reporting the staff has informed QB JT Barrett that UT will be going with only one QB in 2013 for the time being. He will not be attending JD2 this weekend."

I feel comfortable going 'all in' with Swoopes.

Think about how weird conference realignment is making things.....truth be told, we now should root for JT Barrett to land at A&M rather than Tech, Baylor or OU.

Lol, it has totally screwed things up, cause I feel the same way. If we are getting ours I have no issues with you guys getting yours and keepin OU off the map in Texas cause it only will help us if you guys dominate OU and the rest of the Big 12. When you guys got T. Davis to flip from LSU it was a good thing because that took talent away from the Tigers.

maybe they know something we do not. Remember the memo about going after kids that we do not feel like we are second on. That makes no sense to not bring him in and see if maybe he wants another position.

There's some truth to that but I think it's pretty shallow reasoning. You're still recruiting against us head to head for recruits. And don't act like you still won't be pulling against UT in every game either. Not buying it. And LSU losing one player to us won't help you against them.

Here's an updated list as of today that I saw on another site. No QBs coming in (not surprising). I'd like to see us be judicious with the offers at this point, maybe only 5 or 6 this weekend, since we have a very good shot at 4 more kids from JR day 1 (James, Samples, Smythe and D.Wilson). That would get us to 10 already before the below group with a smaller class this year. Offer Perkins and Prevot for sure, 1-2 more DE/LB types, 1-2 DB/WR/Ath types and continue to evaluate the rest. The bolded ones are the pool I'd like to pick from first. All very good players but no need to rush things at this point. Take the cream of the crop only.

WR, Marcell Ateman, Wylie East
WR, Ellis Jefferson, Denton Guyer
WR, Quan Jones, Wylie East
WR, Eldridge Massington, West Mesquite
TE, Jeremiah Gaines, Red Oak
TE, Trent Gow, Mansfield
OL, Austin Davis, Mansfield
OL, Patrick Morris, Denton Guyer
OL, Kent Perkins, Richardson Lake Highlands
OL, Maurice Porter, Fort Bend Marshall
OT, Josh Thomas, Evangel Christian (Shreveport, LA)
DT, Christopher Robinson, Woodlawn (Shreveport, LA)
DT, Vincent Taylor, San Antonio Madison
DE, Daeshon Hall, Lancaster
DE/LB, Deon Hollins, Jr., Fort Bend Marshall
DE/LB, Mike Mitchell, Plano Prestonwood Christian
DE, Torrodney Prevot, Alief Taylor
LB, Deoundrei Davis, Cypress Woods
LB, Brett Wade, Kennedale
DB, George Baltimore, Mansfield
DB, Kameron Miles, West Mesquite
DB, Alfred Pullom, Cypress Woods
DB, Maurice Smith, Fort Bend Dulles
DB, Antwuan Davis, Bastrop
ATH, Chevoski Collins, Livingston
ATH, Jacorey Warrick, Cypress Falls

Man, bad part of low scholly years like this is how much talent we may be leaving at the table for others to pick off. Especially if any of the OOS guys we are looking at are picked up.

Yeah, dang scholarship limits. Of course, keep in mind all the talent we just signed up in the last class. The coaches need to make sure there are very few misses in a smaller class like this though because it becomes more glaring later on. I like the approach of getting these talented guys who are able to play more than one position.

DE Torrodney Prevot - "Sometime this past week, they called my coach and he told me to call them. I talked to coach (Oscar) Giles," Prevot said. "He was just saying I'm one of the best defensive ends in Texas, probably in the nation. He said they're probably going to offer at the junior day."

WR/CB Robbie Rhodes will not be attending JD2 due to illness in family.

Also, I'll be interested to see who we offer if anyone at WR out of this weekend's group. Do we offer Massington if Samples is still on the table?

I understand that but even if we got the number 2 player at every position and you got #1 we would still be a top 15 team talent wise year in and year out. We do want to win head to head recruiting batlles with you guys but as long as we are getting a few and locking OU and LSU out then we will be fine.

I can't disagree with that. It'll be interesting to see your recruiting a couple of years into the SEC move and see how it's going.

It makes sense from the staffs point of view. They already have 4 QBs on campus. 2 freshman, 1 sophomore, and 1 junior. And have one more coming in for 2013 with Swoopes. That ties up 5 schollies in the QB position in 2013. Now with attrition always a possibility it isn't a high number, but that isn't a low number of scholly QBs for a program to have. It is about right.

And then when you factor in how few scholarships the 2013 class is shaping up to have, it makes sense that you wouldn't devote too many offers to the QB position. Although I do like Barrett and obviously would love to have him here to compete.

New offer to ballhawking S Vonn Bell out of Georgia to bring us to 13 total offers. That's also 2 offers to OOS safeties including Harris out of Florida. We've also shown interest in S Su'a Cravens from California and CB Cole Luke from Arizona. Looks like we're trying to go national in DB recruiting. Wonder what that means for possible offers this weekend for in state guys like CB Antwuan Davis, CB Maurice Smith, Ath Jacorey Warrick, S Kameron Miles and S George Baltimore.

The one player that I would love to see the Horns get this weekend (if indeed they only get just one) is Perkins. From everything I have read he will be a great addition to an improving and what I think will be a great offensive line. I am also hoping some of these out of state kids come through. Texas has a great staff that can recruit nationally, and I think the idea of going more aggressively for some of the top talent out of state is great.

I think barrett will have his choice of schools. LSU , Texas Tech are on him right now.

Quotes from ATH Stanvon Taylor of Tulsa, OK:

"(On Wednesday), one of my coaches called me into his classroom. I had been hearing from other people that Texas was interested. But I hadn't heard anything since yesterday," Taylor said. "I talked to coach Akina and he was telling me he watched film, liked how I play and he's highly interested in me."

"I like the fact that they win. I've only been playing football since sixth grade. Since I started watching them, I know they have good program there," Taylor said. "I have heard from people who are older who took visits there, it's a really nice place. I had always been thinking about them, just waiting for them to come up where they'd be interested. Now they are so I definitely want to get down there for a visit."

"He (Demarco Cobbs) was always around my school. He talked to me, gave me advice on anything. I talked to him about three weeks ago and he told me Texas was interested in me," Taylor said.

"My mom, she doesn't want me going too far. I want to go to school around here somewhere. Texas isn't too far. It's not very far away," Taylor said. "And it's a powerhouse. I want to go to a school that's good at football, takes it seriously, where I can get better and hopefully get ready for the next level."

Thanks madcow. Wherever he goes, he probably will help the program that gets him. Does it seem recruiting is tougher now with more risks? Texas, it seems, puts their eggs in one basket (at this time the Texas quarterback recruit seems like a very good basket) They seemed to do that with Whaley a few years ago. I do not understand why Texas quit recruiting Barrett if he truly wanted to go to school here. Anyway in the case of Whaley, I think that he is working out to be a very successful player. Just not at the position most people thought he would play.

Possible next offers/commits...

JR day 2:

CB Antwuan Davis loves Akina. I see him pulling the trigger if we offer (which looks iffy considering all of the DBs we're looking at and tight numbers plus he's been injured).

S Kameron Miles and CB Maurice Smith. The same could be said of them but I think those 2 might get offers anyway. Probably the best S and best CB in the state. Of course Akina might not make a single offer this weekend. Smith might jump on it if offered though since he said Texas was his "dream school".

CB Jacorey Warrick probably gets an offer because although they like him more at CB, he's also a versatile WR/Ath. He grew up a Longhorn fan and might commit this weekend. One of the top athletes in the state. Super fast.

DE Torrodney Prevot really likes Texas as well but plans on taking some more visits. He'll definitely get an offer. Best DE in the state.

LB Deoundrei Davis will probably get an offer. He's in high demand and very athletic. He's been shooting up the boards since college coaches got his film. Maybe the first LB to get an offer.

DE/LBs Mike Mitchell and Deon Hollins. One probably gets offered out of these two (probably Hollins at DE). Great speed rusher.

OT Kent Perkins already has a virtual offer and might be the next guy to commit, possibly this weekend.

JR day 1:

TE Durham Smythe visited again at the practice yesterday. He's still planning on visiting Stanford on 3/3 but things are looking good with him ending up in burnt orange.

OG/C Darius James is going to visit OU and Bama but things still look good.

WR Ra'Shaad Samples also looks good for an eventual commit but he also wants to check out other schools. He's in Lubbock this weekend.

RB Dontre Wilson. Texas is still very high on his list but this one will probably take a while. He's definitely going to visit Oregon soon and probably others.
