UVA News: Sene may be out the rest of the year

0 like 0 dislike
This is a pretty big development as far as our rematch is concerned. Originally, it was thought he would be back for our game. Now he is doubtful to come back at all this year. That is a tough way for a senior to go out, and is even tougher on UVA's aspirations to make a deep run. He was their only legitimate size, and while they do a great job of packing everything in, you need size in March, even if it is only a defensive deterrent and not an offensive factor

He should not jeopardize his future by coming back too soon. He should at least wait until after our game.

I'd heard he wasn't due back until at least the ACC Tourney . . . too bad for them, I hope he comes back well next season!

Sene already played too many games to qualify for a redshirt, and like Mike Scott and Sam Zeglinski, he is a senior. Virginia needs to make the NCAA Tournament this season because they will have very little experience returning next year (basically Harris, Evans, Brogdon, and Mitchell), a consequence of the mass transfer of 4 of the 6 signees from Tony Bennett's first recruiting class....

Yeah it's definitely been a tough loss. He may not be a guy who puts up a ton of stats but he's a very good defender and an excellent communicator on the defensive end. Plus, he's just another body out there. We've adjusted okay to playing without him and we have enough size to compete against most of the ACC but with FSU and UNC still left to play, it's going to be tough to get wins. I'm hoping that we can get a senior night win against you guys.

UVa is hanging by a thread right now, they had a big win against UMD this weekend at home. They are like a cornered, wounded animal right now, but the depth issues are taking their toll with fatigue. Coach Bennett has been good for the program, but he mishandled some of his players which led to two of them quitting the team earlier this year, further exacerbated by the injury to Sene. They are on the road tonight against VT, who upset them at home earlier in the year. Not saying it's a must win to get into the dance, but they still have some tough games ahead. NCST has fallen off so that probably will be one less team the commitee looks at, UM is still competing with them to get in.

I am not sure I would say Tony mishandled a couple of players. KT Harrell was horrible when he was on the court this year and got surpassed by Brogdon. He got his chances to put the ball in the basket and simply didn't do it. Plus, he was a liability on the defensive end of the floor. With Justin Anderson coming in next year, he probably saw the writing on the wall and left. James Johnson was just impatient. He didn't get the minutes this year (although he would get a bunch with Sene's injury) but with Mike Scott and Sene graduating, he'd get plenty of playing time next year. Those two guys quit on their team more so than Tony mishandling them imo. Add to the fact that we have one of the most difficult ACC schedules (@Duke, FSU twice, UNC twice and GT, Wake and BC all once) and it makes for a tough year. We may miss the dance this year but this team fights as hard as any team I've watched all year. Also keep in mind that Joe Harris is now playing with a broken left hand. I think if we get two more ACC wins, we're in. Tonight is a huge game for us. It's definitely one we can't afford to lose. But if we can finish top 4 in the ACC, I think that will be huge too. So I will be rooting againt NCSU and Miami as well.

Honestly, I think we win up there. Even if he came back, rust would be a factor. I like FSU to win that game. If we beat Duke, UM on short rest is my only concern. Virginia is going to limping when we face them. Clemson should've already mailed their season in by March.

Going to be a wild ride to March.

I'm certainly not on the inside so I'm just speculating on the situation. Bennett wasn't giving these guys ANY playing time at the time they transferred. It's rare enough to see one player jump ship mid season, but two? Call it circumstantial evidence if you will, not enough for a conviction, lol. Looks like your wish has been granted, UVA leads late and UM lost tonight. Expect Phhftmann to be even more cantankerous to us over on the main board. He still lurks on here, but Bav has put a piece of duct tape over his mouth, if you know what I mean. laugh
