As much as people complain about Hess there is a long list of refs I would put as being worse than him. Just to name a few:

Ray Natili
Ted Valentine
Mike Eades
Bernard Clinton

and that is just in the eastern sphere. When I watch PAC-12 and big 12 basketball there are easily 10-12 more that jump out after just a few games.

Unfortunately these days saying someone is the best ref is like saying someone is the tallest midget....

Ted Valentine is very showy with his officiating and likes to bring the camera to him. That said, he is one of THE BEST officials at calling with consistency, each and every game, without bias, without being intimidated by any coach. He is flat-out one of the best in the business when you take away his showmanship. Natili is not nearly as bad as Hess, especially considering he has probably 10 years less experience.

Publicly reprimanded??? That is the stupidest shit I've ever heard. What dumb formality to send out a statement that the ACC scolded Hess. If the rule states that as a ref he has the power based on his opinion of what is "extreme or excessive" then there is nothing wrong with it. So he should have had NC State Managment instead of the cop??? Who the hell cares. This is typical for NC State fans. They suck at every major sport now. NC State got so many calls in the first half of that game! They had no room to talk when there little hoosier wanna be from Indiana chunked up a prayer when Dulkys was right in his grill.

I wonder if any one scolded the two idiots he threw out. Adults being tossed at a basketball game should be embarrassing but I doubt those two are smart enough to realize it.

The system is broken when two loudmouths harassing the official are removed from the game site but the official is the one who is publicly reprimanded.

Systems are based on protocol and formalities and when you exceed your authority even if it is just by process, you should be called out. Hess here is being reprimanded, but not really penalized in any way. Really his ultimate authority is supported, but they recognize his procedure needed to be addressed. AKA Hess did to the wrong thing, but arguably the right thing the wrong way. Its typical American BS.
