1993. We got as high as #6 near the end of the regular season. Since then our highest ranking was #13 in 1998.

This is why I don't think the game Thursday is the most important in history, or most important home game, as some have suggested. Sold out house, name opponent, first place in the ACC on the line... We have been here before.

I believe it was Durham. Kennedy was here in the 1980s through early-mid 1990s.

Our highest ever ranking is #2 during the first five weeks of the 1972/73 season.

Petty is a yes. Cowens was already with the Celtics. Hugh Durham was our coach. Kennedy was the late 80s - early 90s.

That is true, but for recent history it is the biggest. There are students at FSU now that weren't even born then.

The late sixties, early seventies were our best run by far, in the top ten much of that time, top 5 some of it, and of course, number two in 1972.

The '72 team's starters were;

- Lawrence McCray at the low post, Reggie Royal at the high post, with Ron King and Roland Garret on the wings and Otto Petty at PG. Greg Samuels was also our PG then, think they shared starting at times, and then we had Ron Harris off the bench, Larry Gay as well. Samuels defense was superb, Pettt's passing and quickness was excellent and King and garrett nailed long arching "three's", I use quotations becasue the three point rule wasn't in effect then but most all of our wing jump shots were from well beyond the current three point line.

Dave Cowens was not on this team, his team preceded this one, and he, along with Willie Williams were an amazing frontcourt for us. These teams were top five at times, always battling jacksonville University for a a torunamant spot, as with only 26 teams in the torunament then, and with JU and us both independents, we were never both in the same toruney during that run as they would use our regular seasoin games to decide who got the bid since we were both ranked very high.

You have to keep in mind that back then the tourney did not always have the best teams as conferences got just the one bid, so a lower ranked ACC team that won the ACCT would go while a top five ranked UNC as eample, would not even make the tourney. Much different these days.

Was that ranking in 98 when we played Duke on Espn Saturday evening at home and got absolutely waxed? If so I think I remember that game. I was a junior in high school that year and was so amped for the game that night and we got absolutely crushed!

Yes it was Duke we faced when we were #13 but it wasn't really a waxing (75-63). We did get waxed a few times that year. The worst one was vs #3 UNC (103-55).

Attaway, AtlSFNole. Good recall of some good times in the life of FSU basketball.

The Jax games for some years were war. Pembruck Burrows and Artis Gilmore were both over seven feet for the Dolphins and they had a strong supporting cast as well.

The 72 team lost late in the regular season by nearly 20 to Cincinati, then went on a run for the ages.They squeaked past a stronger- than- given- credit- to Western Kentucky before knocking out conference champs one by one... Minnesota/Big Ten, Kentucky/SEC, and North Carolina/ACC before facing the Wizard of Westwood and his perennial champ UCLA.

Lawrence McCray, FSU's 6'11" sophomore (first year eligible to play then) center, was whistled for three quick fouls, thus opening up the inside for Big Bill Walton. In a rock em sock em game, the Noles were the only team in UCLA's long streak of championships to lose by less than 10... on UCLA's home court. 82-76 if I remember correctly.

As a kid then, it seemed like FSU basketball would always be good, 'cause that is how it was. Hugh Durham was a recruiting demon and we were on a roll. When he left for Georgia, it was a sad day around our house. Kinda funny how things happen... his rival at Jacksonville, Joe Williams, later was the coach for FSU.

Coach Hugh Durham at the age of 34 took us to the 1972 Nat'l Championship game in LA against the hometown UCLA coached John Wooden Bruins, Wooden said we were the best team they had played against in his 10 Nat'l Championships. In getting to the Finals we were underdogs in beating the Big 10 Champ, Adolf Rupp's SEC Champ KY in his last game and ACC Champ Dean Smith's NC. Sad day when we let Coach Durham slip away to GA where he took them to the Final.
