2-3 zone and perimeter passing

0 like 0 dislike
I have said it in the past and will reiterate it.. We are gonna see a lot of zone since teams will force us too take the three.. I think we have to pass the ball more to free up the perimeter shots, since we are not effective at contested shots.. I hope to see less Russ smith forcing passes down low.. We passed the ball very well in the Depaul game and hope that is something we will see more of..

Get the ball to Russ and get the hell out of the way.

To beat a zone you need crisp passing, good spacing and someone who can work the upper part of the lane. If you accomplish these three things and play smart a zone can be picked apart.

Keeping the ball ahead of how the defense is reacting, just a shade,is the key to me.Ball movement and timely screens.

In order for us to beat the zone now Dieng will have to prove he can make the FT line jumper.

Or whoever flashes to that soft spot against the 2-3 zone. That could be any of them.

I would like to see Chane flash there and have him attack the basket off the dribble and be agressive. I know Chane is very good finishing on the baseline though.

I also like the idea of moving Chris Smith or Kuric in there to shoot the shot or create for Chane and dieng.

I don't think we have as many options as we might believe. While I would love KK to flash in the middle of the zone, the reality is that his comfort zone is in the corner or on the wing. Plus, if you watched UK and Miss St, when State tried to flash a guard in the middle of the zone, they either had to shoot over Davis at 6-10 or Gilchrest at 6-7 with Jones staying underneath. UK can also use Miller at 6-7. Syracuse can do the same thing with Melo and Oriahki. KK would not be able to get his shot off. Chane might be a good option if he had better ballhandling skills. How many times have we seen smaller players strip the ball out of his hands going up and I do think he needs to be at the rim to finish. Blackshear might be the guy if he knew more about the offense and I think he might be able to get his shot off against bigger players.

The point we're trying to make is teams are leaving the sweet spot and in your example im assuming your saying Davis and Melo will come up and gaurd the FT line which Syracuse did and we burned them time and time again. The adjustment they made was to keep Melo back and have Dieng take that shot.

Really not advisable to put the ball on the floor in the middle of a zone. All five defenders will be collapsing and slapping at the ball. You may have time for a quick dribble, but nothing more.

I agree. Catch, turn and shoot. If you catch, turn and try to dribble, chances are very strong you're going to get the ball stripped away.

Thats the thing after the first 10 minutes Syracuse never callosped Melo stayed under the basket and the forwards guarded our shooters. Basically they was making Dieng, who was in the middle of the zone, become a scorer they wasn't guarding him. Thats the point that is being made of putting a play maker in there. That last play when Dieng throw it away he could have dribbled straight in a slammed the ball NOBODY was within 5 feet of him.

Deing has to make better decisions when faced with that scenario. He didn't make good decisions against Syracuse. He made better decisions against DePaul. I would prefer he just take that open 14 foot jump shot. He can make it. He just needs the confidence to shoot it. Maybe Pitino needs to yank him out like he did Blackshear for not taking a shot when he should.
