The ACC's 2nd Tier Is Collapsing

Miami and NC State both lost, and UVA is struggling with Virginia Tech in Blacksburg....all 3 teams headed for 7-6 records and are closer to 6-7 Maryland and Clemson than they are to the 3 frontrunners....

UVA is recovering and winning now. At least we may salvage a 4th bid for the conference.

we got lucky to pull that one out. very lucky. the officiating was plain awful and it was just an awful game to watch with all of the clock issues. I'll take the win and hope we can hold on to 4th in the ACC. Good luck against Duke on Thursday. I'll be there.

Miami's barely in thanks to other bubble teams choking. The Pack just flatlined. Virginia fought hard and won. Moving closer to a bid for the Hoos. Miami must beat FSU or they're in trouble. Minus the Duke win, their resume is unimpressive. NC State must win a few in Atlanta and beat Miami next week or say hello NIT.

UVA is close to a lock for the Tourney. There's no way the ACC gets any less than 4 teams in the tourney this season, especially with as soft as the bubble is. UVA has definitely placed itself squarely in that fourth spot.

Miami really needs to finish strong, especially after losing tonight. A win against FSU this weekend would be huge for their chances.

I really think NC State needed to win one of the three against the top three. Of course, they went 0-3 and now have to go on a tear to have a chance.

I really don't see the ACC getting more than five teams into the tourney. The question is which team will be the fifth, or will both Miami and NC State wilt, leaving the ACC with only four bids?.

The ACC could get the same number of bids as the MWC (4).

The ACC was forecasted to only have 4 bids over a month ago by CBS's early brackets. Seems like NCST and Miami who was playing for the presumed 5th are fading. A lot has changed to the SEC bids too where they won't even hit their projected number now. Many are collapsing....

How UM is even that close to an NCAA bid is a joke.

Go FSU

The weak bubble could certainly allow for a few more BCS schools to get at-large berths, but some of the mid-majors could also benefit as well. The Mountain West, WCC, Missouri Valley, A-10, and even Conference USA should snag multiple bids at the expense of the Pac-12, ACC, and SEC. Here's the breakdown for multiple bids as I see it today:

Big East (8-9): Syracuse, Marquette, G-Town, Louisville, UConn, Seton Hall, WVU, Notre Dame, and possibly USF (bubble)
Big Ten (5-6): Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and possibly Purdue (bubble)
Big 12 (5): Kansas, Baylor, Missouri, K-State, Iowa State
ACC (4-5): Duke, UNC, FSU, Virginia, and possibly Miami (bubble)
SEC (4-5): Kentucky, Florida, Vanderbilt, Alabama, with Miss State on the bubble.
Pac-12 (1-3): California, with both Oregon and Washington on the bubble
MWC (4): UNLV, Colorado State, New Mexico, and SD State
MVC (2): Wichita State and Creighton
A-10 (2-3): Temple and St. Louis, with St. Joe's on the bubble
CUSA (2): Southern Miss and Memphis
WCC (2-3): Gonzaga and St. Mary's, with BYU on the bubble.

Bids could also be stolen if Murray State (OVC), Middle Tennessee (Sun Belt), Long Beach State (Big West), and Iona (MAAC) fail to win their conference tournaments. Surprisingly, the CAA has been receiving a lot of hype as a multibid league, but none of their top teams (VCU, Drexel, George Mason) has an RPI better than 74.....
