Apparently, he fractured his fibula against Notre Dame.

And if the truth be known, Manuel was not injury free most of the season. We all suspected it but there obviously is a close lipped staff in Tallahassee now. Don't know that that is all bad. After all, if the public does not know, neither does the opponents coaching staff. Remember Bobby was pretty much open about just about everything except his personal health issues.

Again, not sure that is a bad thing.

What an amazing revelation - a fractured fibula is no small matter - E.J.'s second half passing was already heroic and now it becomes an epic performance in Seminole history.

Imagine a season with EJ is injury free!

I do have to question why you let a guy play in a meaningless game with a broken leg? Our backups can't be so bad that a guy on one leg is a better option, and why risk further damaging the leg and jeopardizing the rest of his career.

Man, we have just been snakebit with the injury bug at QB. Ponder missed significant parts of his jr/sr seasons (including most of his senior bowl game) due to them, and EJ missed halves of 2 games and all of a 3rd (we lost all 3).

Any doctors out there?

Is it possible that EJ's break was so small that he and the medical staff at the bowl did not know it was broken until an x-ray was taken?

it was a fracture not a clean break. Damn that Jimbo he should have been wearing his portable Xray helmet so he could have examined EJ's leg.

Easy. I didn't see in the article that it mentioned when he was diagnosed with the break -- but the way it was presented, it was just kept tight-lipped (again, were they tight lipped in the 2nd half, or just through January). No, I don't expect any coach to look at a player and diagnose an injury like an x-ray or MRI; but if a key part of your team is injured and it's known (and we don't know if it was or not), I don't think they should keep playing in that situation.

I think it happened in the first quarter. He didn't bend that leg or anything after that happened. He is one tough SOB, I wish they would limit his runs though

If it had been a break it would have broken out thru the skin in some cases.

A fracture can be a partial break, a simple break or a compound fracture which means the bone broke the skin. So a fracture could go from slight to severe or somewhere in between.

sounds like you agree that a fracture is just another word for a break. A break can be a partial fracture, a simple fracture or a compound fracture.

also, i thought a compound fracture meant it was broken in more than one place, without regard to whether it breaks the skin.

yes there were. And another site who kept saying EJ should run the ball a lot during the season. I think it is safe to say we are a pro style offense with multiple sets/formations to throw the defense a curve. Sure, let's run some type of option here or there...scramble and make a play as needed, but EJ should be a passer first and a runner second. Just too many injuries to our starting qbs over the past few years. An improved OL should also help.

Compound fracture: A fracture in which the bone is sticking through the skin. Also called an open fracture.

Maybe we should consider having our QB run less.

A fracture and a break are the same exact thing. It's like a bruise and a contusion, they are different words for the same thing. And yes, there are a whole host of fracture types; spiral, greenstick, compound, transverse, oblique, comminuted ect. The list goes on. And yes, it is extremely possible they didn't know he had a fracture. The fibula doesn't bear weight so it's possible to play through it depending on where the fracture is and the severity. It's also possible to have what's called an avulsion fracture. Where the ligament attaches to the bone, it can pull away rather than the ligament spraining. Who knows, they didn't say the type he had. I've had players play through those injuries before and it wasn't until a week or two later after lack of progress that we found out it was a fracture. It's more common than you think.
