One of the more blatant hit pieces I've seen on Cal/UK. Not much of what he says is relevant at all. Even the Deener on the Early Birds (big Cards fan) was disagreeing with the article.

Eh, who cares? Nothing to get worked up about. The fact that most people have never heard of him should tell you all you need to know. If that were a Decoursey or a Goodman or even a Forde, then you know the readership is high and (with the exception of Forde) at least there is some level of knowledge there. With this guy, it looks like he wrote this article a long time ago and just waited for the night when the cats would be in a scrum and dusted it off for posting. I wouldn't waste a single minute worrying about it if I were you.

"Who is Thayer Evans?

Who the heck is Thayer Evans? A lot of Auburn folk are trying to answer that question tonight. As far as they can tell, Thayer Evans is a hack sports writer who has bounced from gig to gig, assassinating characters, and playing fast & loose with the facts.

Very little is known about Thayer Evans outside of his unabashedly biased articles. The most common knowledge about Mr. Evans is that he is a senior college football writer for FoxNews.com. He has freelanced for the New York Times, often collaborating there with fellow hacks Pete Thamel and Pat Forde. Before that, he was a low level sports writer for the Houston Chronicle, but was relieved of his duties because of inaccuracies in his resume.

Because information on the man central to many of the accusations being hurled at Cam Newton is so spotty, I'd like to take this opportunity to add a little more to the public list of "facts" contained in Thayer Evans' elusive bio. According to a three year old New York Times blog, "The Bracket", mediated by Pete Thamel, Evans is:

"A freelance writer who has been contributing to The New York Times for two years. Evans also writes for the Houston Chronicle as well as other newspapers and magazines. He played college basketball at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, an NAIA school in Bartlesville, Okla. He was best known for sporting a blooming afro, wearing a winter hat during practice and coming off the bench to deliver hard fouls to opposing players.
Given Mr. Evans' questionable representation of the facts in his online attacks of Auburn, Texas, and Kentucky universities, I have no idea how much of that information is accurate. It all sounds a bit contrived and self-aggrandizing to me.

It should also be noted that Mississippi State is not the only university to be edged out by Auburn in the recruiting of Cam Newton. There were three schools atop Newton's list of possibilities this time last year including Oklahoma. With regard to Thayer Evans, the Oklahoma connection is just one more motivating factor in his written hatchet job. Evans won't be an Auburn, Newton, or SEC "apologist", but he has no problem writing with an angle favoring Oklahoma whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Ultimately, I hope that little by little, we can begin to piece together the puzzling background and motivation behind Thayer Evans' constant need to assassinate characters and shake the foundations of major athletic programs that he deems threatening."

Has Forde come out and called it an excellent piece of journalism yet? Praised the editor for the pristine grammar? I've read a lot of idiotic, blatant hate in my time, but this is easily top 5. Anybody who saw ANY of that game last night could easily see that it was a rabid crowd, and MSU was seriously amped up for that game last night. They've got elite talent, and are a VERY good team when they're focused. This win showed how this team is DIFFERENT.

So many holes in this article. I'll just point out one. "Calipari's Memphis team blew a nine point lead in the last two minutes against Kansas, even with future NBA MVP Derrick Rose on the floor." The same Rose who missed key free throws during those last couple minutes? How is that Calipari's fault?

Calipari took a comatose Memphis program all the way to the final game, and would have taken a non existent UMASS team that far if UK hadn't been in their half of the bracket. He's turned UK into a juggernaut overnight. Yeah, what an awful coach.

Anyone who can watch that game last night and see UK come back from 13 down and then come back from 7 down about 3 other times in the second half and comes away saying this UK team is vulnerable or should be devalued in some way, is, to put it nicely, just not very bright.

I'd say this guy had an article prepared to run about UK and "another Calipari team collapsing" and was about as angry as Dee Bost was last night when he shoved Gilchrist out of bounds when he realized he wasn't going to be able to use it. But he still wanted to use it so badly that he decided to keep part of it and make it work.
