The SEC may only get 4 bids to the NCAA Tourney

And Alabama still has work to do to get that 4th bid. SEC basketball is in the dumps as a whole. The plus side to this is if USC was ever going to make a change - now is the time. Wait a year and the new guys at Auburn, UT, Ark (all of whom are showing promise) have an extra year of building their programs. Start over now while everyone is down - then race to the top.

Yeah, the SEC is not that great of a basketball conference right now and we are dead last in the conference.

That means we are beyond pathetic.

UK and Florida are going to stay strong. Arkansas is on the rise back up, but very young this year. Those 3 have proven they can be elite programs before and there is no reason they won't stay that way.

After those 3 there is plenty of room for South Carolina to move in to the SEC's elite. No one else really cares about basketball in the SEC and there is no reason we can't be a top 6 SEC team each year.

uk, florida, and vandy are locks for the tourney. miss st. if they win their next couple will be a lock and bama and arky have chances. 3 is a definite with an outside shot at 6.

I don't think we could win the SEC tourney if the other 11 schools had to bench their starting 5. We might would, but it would be far from a sure thing.

I think the SEC will get either 3 or 4 teams. UK, Florida, and Vandy are in. I think the winner of the Bama/MSU game this Saturday could play their way in.

RealTimeRPI does projections for the rest of the season and here is how they have it playing out in the SEC. Granted I think the RPI is greatly flawed but the selection committee uses it. Were it to play out like this I think that no (formerly) SEC West teams would make the tourney. Personally I think the winner of the Bama-Mississippi State game on Saturday will win out and make the tourney. However, considering that all the (formerly) SEC West teams have to play one another in the final few games I don't see any way that more than one team out of the West (Bama or MSU) could make the Dance, barring a run to the championship game in the SEC Tourney.

*Keep in mind that RealTimeRPI is projecting the records but I'm making the call whether this would put the team in/out. If it plays out like this Bama will be the only team with a claim, and I think they would have played their way out of the tourney with their underwhelming play in conference games over the second half of the season. At 8-8 in conference play I'd expect their RPI to drop to around 40 or below, which is iffy territory considering AQs. Bama's loss to us could keep them out of the tourney.
