Here is the exact language from the 2012 NCAA rulebook:

Art. 3. Technical Fouls
a. Administrative technical foul. A technical foul that is not specific to
an individual

Got to be one of the dumbest technicals I've seen called. Followed by Moultrie hanging on the rim at the other end minutes later with no call until he started barking at the ref...unbelievable.

I thought Moultrie should been hit with a double T. First for hanging on the rim, then should have been hit with another for barking at ref, and then should have been hit with a flagrant 1 as well. He then would have been ejected and would miss the next game as well. He did everything in that 5 seconds that kentucky did for the T's.

Wanted to smack Jimmy when he said it was the "right call". Cleary A.D. was just trying to prevent himself from landing on his back. 6'11 guy running extremely hard and then to all of the sudden try and stop himself must be tough.

Bad Call!!!

I looked up the definition of that rule in the dictionary last night after it happened. It was under bullshit.

*toot toot toot toot*
*walks 50 feet to the scorer's table*
*signals a T on the OP*
*struts off feeling like a rockstar*

Whoa, the crowd is cheering for me. I think I even hear them chanting my name!

if you look at the replay, he does get a shove in the lower back just as he lifts off. totally bad call. clock oerators, ref's freezing FT shooters, etc. just wish someone had flashed the "call me" after the final buzzer!

Only if AD let go of the rim right around this point, he wouldn't have got a Technical. What was he thinking?!?!?!?!?!

Jimmy Dykes' non-stop Lewinskis for anything the officials do is really annoying. Hell, even Nessler expressed reservations and he wasn't a basketball coach in a former life.

Obviously the officials wouldve preferred he unnecessarily land on his head rather than control himself then let go.

Davis didn't do anything different than what most players do in that situation. I think he hung on the rim all of 2 seconds. Some really dumb calls in that game. Refs are just getting out of control anymore.

Agree it was a crap call, and it wasn't the only one. Davis has the right to keep himself from falling on his back. He had a large amount of momentum and he did get pushed slightly in the back as he was going up. If he had not held on to the rim, he could have been seriously injured. It's allowed in the rules, but the ref wanted to make his presence known.

But hey, there were multiple poor calls in that game and UK still persevered.

There wasn't anyone underneath him, but he didn't know that. He knew that he had a defender trailing him. It would be reasonable for him to assume that the player may have still been behind him or even underneath him after the play.

10 years ago that would have been a no-brainer technical, but in recent years officials have been more laid back on the call. That is 2nd T on Davis for hanging on the rim in the past few games.

This was one of those plays, that if taken LITERALLY out of the rule book, was called correctly.

However, very rarely, if ever, does a 6'11 guy go the length of the court at full speed and dunk. His forward momentum made it very difficult to keep from continuing right through the basket support, so that is why he hung on the rim, to stop some of the momentum.

It's simple physics. Think about if that was a 6'1 player. Most of his momentum would have been used vertically just to get to the rim to dunk, whereas Davis only has to jump a few inches. Therefore, he's going to have more sideways momentum and thus, needed something to stop.

I'm fine with him hanging because it was obvious watching the play why he did it...

After watching it again, I dont think the technical was for hanging on the rim but rather for the little pull up he did at the end. I went off when it was called but I can see the little extra lift he did before letting go.

Still a bad call because you lift yourself to straighten out your body after swinging wildly like that. Otherwise you're just gonna end up landing on your stomach coming back.

I thought he held on to the rim because he was running so fast and didn't want to hurt himself. If he was standing still and dunked it he wouldn't have held on at all.

Agree that it was not a good call at all. The refs need to be told that is NOT how to call a T. I understand the T on Teague but I felt that the ref should have swallowed the whistle just like he did when Teague was fouled moments before.

I'm a ref for the local leagues and the Only time a tech is called for hanging on the rim is if the player uses the rim to pull himself up. That tech was bull and both Steve levy and Stan verette are dumb mothertouchers for saying Ant was celebrating and it was a good T.
