Clemson and FSU talks to Big 12???

0 like 0 dislike
This is a fact and recorded in the Clemson BOT's meeting minutes from 1/24/2012. My question or thought is...this a ploy to try to force the sec's hand on the conf. expansion issue or does CU and FSU really want out of the acc at all cost? We both fit better in the sec, but other than TX, OK, and OSU not really anything else of interest in big 12. Well I guess TCU will be big 12 as well. I say if not the sec, then stay put in the acc. It does appear that whatever happens, CU and fsu are going together.

I am glad fsu and clemson are together, but give me ND and another football team and stay in the acc. All things are leading to a playoff system so it won't matter as much to what conf. you are in.

To me personally moving to the Big 12 does nothing. Unless it means more money for Clemson I don't see any incentive at all for the university. I honestly think all things considered we're better off staying the ACC. I'm with you though, if it's not the SEC I want to stay put.

*Not posting this to rub salt in your wounds.

Colleague Mark Schlabach uncorked his newest preseason top 25 with (sad sigh time) almost seven months until the college season begins.

Here's where the Big 12 teams landed:

4. Oklahoma Sooners
Previous rank: 5
The Sooners are going to be really explosive on offense again, especially with quarterback Landry Jones and receivers Kenny Stills and Jaz Reynolds coming back. There's no question OU will sorely miss record-setting receiver Ryan Broyles, but the Sooners signed a deep corps of receivers in their 2012 recruiting class, including Sterling Shepard, Durron Neal and Derrick Woods. Oklahoma's defense should be better after coach Bob Stoops hired his brother, former Arizona coach Mike Stoops, as his team's defensive coordinator. OU will have to replace defensive ends Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis, and linebacker Travis Lewis.

7. West Virginia Mountaineers
Previous rank: 7
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney might still be having nightmares about West Virginia's offense. Here's the really scary part: The Mountaineers should be even better on offense in their second season in coach Dana Holgorsen's system. Quarterback Geno Smith is coming back, along with tailback Dustin Garrison and top receivers Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey. Holgorsen really likes his incoming skill players, including receiver Deontay McManus, and the Mountaineers signed four offensive linemen. With defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel leaving for Arizona, the Mountaineers are going to ditch his 3-3-5 stack scheme and go with a more traditional 3-4 or 4-3 defense.

12. Kansas State Wildcats
Previous rank: 12
With quarterback Collin Klein and linebacker Arthur Brown coming back this season, the Wildcats might be among the Big 12 favorites, along with Oklahoma and West Virginia (if the Mountaineers get to leave the Big East). Klein will enter next season as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate after totaling more than 3,000 yards of total offense and scoring 40 touchdowns last season. Top tailback John Hubert and receiver Chris Harper are also coming back, but three starting offensive linemen will have to be replaced. Five starters are also leaving on defense. Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, 72, filled his team's biggest need by signing four top defensive linemen: juco transfers Chaquil Reed and Wesley Hollingshed, and prep recruits Travis Britz and Demonte Hood.

15. TCU Horned Frogs
Previous rank: 15
The Horned Frogs started preparing for life in the Big 12 by signing a recruiting class that was heavy on defensive linemen. TCU's top signees were defensive end Devonte Fields and tackle Joey Hunt. The Horned Frogs are making the jump from the Mountain West to the Big 12 this season, after winning 11 or more games in seven of the past nine seasons. TCU will take an eight-game winning streak into the Big 12 after finishing 7-0 against MWC foes in its last season in the league. TCU brings back much of its firepower on offense, with quarterback Casey Pachall, tailbacks Waymon James and Ed Wesley and receivers Josh Boyce and Skye Dawson coming back. Three starting offensive linemen will have to be replaced, along with star linebacker Tank Carder on defense.

19. Oklahoma State
Previous rank: 16
The Pokes won 23 games the past two seasons and claimed the school's first conference title since 1976. If OSU coach Mike Gundy is going to keep his program near the top of the Big 12, he's going to have to rebuild his record-setting offense after losing quarterback Brandon Weeden and receiver Justin Blackmon. Rising junior Clint Chelf, redshirt freshman J.W. Walsh and incoming freshman West Lunt (who already has enrolled at OSU) will battle for the starting quarterback job this spring. The Pokes also must replace starting left tackle Levy Adcock and two other starting offensive linemen. The Pokes signed six receivers and top tight end Dominic Ramacher in their recruiting class. Eight starters are expected back on defense, but safety Markelle Martin is a big loss.

22. Texas Longhorns
Previous rank: 21
The Longhorns rebounded nicely this past season, after a head-scratching 5-7 finish in 2010. Although the UT defense made big strides under first-year coordinator Manny Diaz, its offense continued to sputter because of poor quarterback play. David Ash will have the edge entering spring practice, but he'll continue to be pushed by Case McCoy. The running game should be better if tailbacks Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron can stay healthy, and incoming freshman Johnathan Gray -- ranked the No. 1 running back in the ESPNU 150 -- might provide immediate help. The Horns will have to replace linebackers Keenan Robinson and Emmanuel Acho, as well as defensive tackle Kheeston Randall. Incoming freshman Malcolm Brown was the No. 7 prospect in the ESPNU 150.

Umm you don't make any sense. I don't think anybody is shying away from the Big 12 because of how difficult it is, the SEC is every bit as tough or tougher and that's what the majority of us want. I personally don't want to go to the Big 12 because West Virginia or Florida State would be our closest conference opponent. If that's the case I can't go to many road games and even though the Big 12 is more prestigious Clemson isn't a Big 12 kind of program. It would look and feel uncomfortable, it would also be very tough too I'm not denying that.

I think (at least hope) your admins are seeing the writing on the wall. The SEC is going to 16 and they aren't going to pick up Clemson or FSU because they already have USC and UF. The two states they want in are VA and NC. That probably means VT and NCST. Who is the B1G going to expand with-Maryland makes the most sense for starters.

The programs that really care about football Clemson, FSU, GT, VT, Miami are probably going to get pouched by either the SEC, B10 or B12. It makes sense to get on that train earlier than later.

Yeah I agree jumping on the boat sooner than later if that's where things are indeed headed. I'd rather the ACC add two more and the both of us be able to stay put. If the ACC does go after 2 more I would assume it would be 2 basketball minded schools though. Realistically I'd like us to go after Louisville (strong in basketball and lot of promise in football) and USF (will continue to grow). But I wouldn't be surprised if we get UConn and Rutgers (academics being a big factor) if we go that route.

outside of ND, who would be another Football school that would fit into the ACC and not have to travel 1500 to 2000 miles to play

the only one in the East/South is Penn St and why would they leave the Big 10 with it's own TV network and more TV contract money than the ACC has. I think the Big 10 package is bigger than the SEC TV package.

It's rumored that the Big 12 is going to also have a new TV contract plus it's own TV network and that would mean lots more money for Clemson and really how many games do any of the average fans go to on the road. Not Many. So go to the Big 12 rather than stay in a basketball conf. and a conf. that has shown over the years to have NO NO NO respect for Cllemson.

Adding that 3rd year on to the probation should be enough, taking the baseball tournment from Greenville because the ACC felt it gave Clemson an advantage, and put in in UNC backdoor in Durham, or anywhere in N.c.

I wish the Big 12 would move this way and how many teams do they have now, 10 or 11 with WV, add Clemson, FSU, GT, and either Miami or VT. Keep those teams in the same div. or two divs. depending if they go with 2 or 4 divs. and it would make sense and keep some local teams together. I would like to see at lease one or two teams from the west in the divs. just to have new teams to play and make it more of an overall conf. not a regionaal conf.

If you think the ACC is bad you haven't seen Texas!!! They are the ones that destroyed the big 12

Geography is my preference when picking a conference or choosing a member. Stadium seating will need to be reduced to accommodate attendance and TV if conferences continue to expand regionally.

it must not be to bad I see 90% of the Big 12 teams are still in the conf.

So if Texas as it's on network, it's just more money in their pocket, if it's so good maybe Clemson could get their own network and if they can't shut up about what some universities can do and you cant.

It's TExas and Oka that will help put a Big 12 tv package together worth money to every school in the conf. and that would benefit Clemson and Iowa St and FSU.

At least Clemson would be in a conf. that is trying to build itself up with TV networks and not like the ACC who only cares about basketball and school North of Charlotte.

Hey guys, we'd love to have Clemson, FSU, and a couple of other ACC schools. Whether that happens or not is way beyond my pay grade.

I guess we destroyed the Big 12 by staying put according to the original poster. If it is because of the Longhorn Network that is a bit of a joke since it only covers 3rd tier games. I also think Texas only has 1 vote when it comes to conference decisions. Of course conspiracies abound.

I don't think Texas has destroyed the Big 12, it's still existing, and with Texas the Big 12 will continue to exist and bring in large TV contract for all the other universities.

I hope if they expand to 16 teams, assuming they have only 11 now, if the Big 12 goes East for Clemson and FSU they would also bring in GT for that TV market and then look at VT for Virginia market. They would need one more team and it would be interesting to see if Miami or Va. or S. Fla. from the East would come or bring in a Boise St. from the West.

As a longtime ACC fan, I would hate to see Clemson or FSU leave the ACC, but I'm not going to shed a tear if either do...In fact, College Football is driving all of this conference realignment mess, yet College Football is the most morally and financially corrupt sport in this country right now, and it's National Champions are currently all "paper-champs" determined by Computers and Media types...Thank Goodness for the NCAA basketball tourney which actually determines a "True" champion on the court....

Ask West Virginia how those trips to the Midwest and Central Time Zone, will work out for them in a couple of years...

West Virginia tried to get into both the ACC and SEC, but their Academics were just not up to par, especailly in regards to the ACC schools, so they now have to travel to the middle of the country to find a conference that will take them, and they of course want some teams in the Eastern Time Zone to follow themroll

Bottom line: If you want out of the ACC, get out...You can and will be replaced as South Carolina was when they felt that they couldn't compete in the ACC because of Academics back in the early 70's when Paul Dietzel was hired away from LSU.

If Clemson and FSU think that things will be much more rosy following behind the footsteps of both Texas and Oklahoma in the Central Time Zone...Have at it boyssmokin

Long live the ACC, and so long to any ACC Traitors!

Would you rather:

1.) Be in a conference with a bully like Texas; or
2.) Be in a conference with a bully like Swofford?

The longhorn network will most likely outlast swofford. I question is, will the next commish give everyone a fair shake? That is the acc unknown. Neb felt they would never get a fair deal in the big 12, so they bolted. Looks to have worked well for them. I'm for CU making a move if we could have a similar outcome.

To the previous poster who claims there little in common between the schools (Clemson and Oklahoma). I don't think anything could be further from the truth. At least based on what the Clemson football players had to say at the 89 Citrus bowl. Prior to the game as the players from both teams settled into their hotels, more then a few of the Clemson players were actually surprised how much they had in common. The conversations covered everything from hunting and fishing. To how much the populations in both states were of similar size. Google it and see some of the comments. Geography is no longer the single biggest requirement in conference realignment, money is. Bringing FSU and Clemson into the Big 12 would make it a very good conference in many ways. Including the ability to bargain a television contract that would benefit all parties. True, travel for the fans would be difficult at best. It would be very important that the scheduling consider this to provide each team some fraction of games that would allow the occasional traveler an opportunity each year to go and see a game of their favorite team. Just an opinion.
