USC and Clemson will be required ? by state law ? to continue their annual football matchup in perpetuity if one lawmaker has his way.
State Rep. Nathan Ballentine, R-Lexington, has introduced a proposal, to be considered by a panel of House members Wednesday, to require the two teams to continue their annual face-off, college football

Sign it, I know TDP rather it not be signed but I don't want some sort of crap to come up down the road where we don't play every year.

I like that too playing the game at the end of the year. Obviously it isn't a law but I thought it was already written in stone that we had to play each other every year? I guess not.

The "law" that Clemson & SCar must play is about like the "gentlemen's agreement" that FSU, Clemson and GaTech will never be admitted into the SEC. Urban myth. Wives' tale.
When SCar left the ACC, there was talk of the ACC telling Clemson that they had to drop the rivalry. Legislators then started talking about such a law, but it was never enacted because the ACC sent word that they would never require termination of the rivalry.
Will it happen now? Nah, it's just politics talkin'. Would it be a bad thing? Nah.

Agreed...From what I've remember hearing, it was when we were in the Southern Conference and only the winning team from the conference was allowed to go to a bowl game. (I think) Both Clemson and Maryland accepted bowl invites even though we didn't win the conference and the SOuthern Conference was trying to prohibit other members from playing us the next season.

according to the book Carolina-Clemson Game 1896-1966 wrote by Don Barton,
it say in the chapter of 1952 this
"The trip to the Gator Bowl game to play Miami on New Years day of 1952 placed Clemson in the bad graces of the Southern Conference. The Tigers and Maryland requested relief from a Conference ban on post-season football games and were refused permission to accept bids. The two schools dedcided to accept, anyhow.
The conference voted to punish the two schools by forbidding them to play other conferences opponents for one year, except that they could play each other.
Howevery, the ruling did allow for the playing of any game required by state law.
This left an inviting loop hole for "Big Thursday" supporters and the South Carolina legislature passed a law requiring that the two schools play each other in football."
that must have been passed for that one year.
also in the 1996 Clemson yearbook it says basically the same thing as above but added, "This resulted in teams leaving the Southern Conference and forming the ACC."
neither says why the ban was placed on the Southern Conf. teams but I think I've read it before but can't remember the reason.

while I agree that the ravalry should continue, I also believe politics should stay out of it. A mandatory game forced upon by the state is just crazy.

there is nothing crazy about a law in the situation, Clemson vs USC in football, basketball or baseball, if there is some chance the games are going to be stopped.
Or if the football game is about to be moved to the 1st of the year.
If we the fans of both universities want to see our game as a Big Rival game, and taken seriously across the nation it needs to be played late in the year as all Big Time Rival games are played such as Texas/AM, USC/UCLA, Fla./FSU, Aubur/Bama.
If it takes a law then pass the law and that would be the end of it and no one, ESPN, TV of any network, No Conference, No Coach, No AD would be allowed to change the game or the time when we the fans want to see this game played.
