POLL: Is there anything wrong with rushing the court?

0 like 0 dislike

So I wanted your opinion. One of my good friends (Vandy fan) texted me yesterday to congratulate me on the big win Northwestern win over MSU, but then as usual from him he starts to give me a hard time about our fan base rushing the court. I personally see nothing wrong with it, but he claims it is "trashy". He says:

"Look, I just think rushing the court is trashy. And if it has to happen, then it better happen against a #1 or maybe #2/3 ranked team, and preferably a rival. I was embarrassed for IU when they rushed the court after beating UK!"

"If IU was a "historic program" like they claim they wouldn't rush"

"I am surprised that you rushed the court because you beat a ranked opponent. That's typically what mid majors do".

I would love for him to chime in as he is a Rivals poster.

What are your thoughts? Like I said I love to see teams rush the court and I see absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I understand that it is banned in the SEC, but it still happens. Thoughts?

There are rare occasions when I think it is acceptable like winning the National Championship or Clinching a Conference Championship but otherwise I chalk it up to mob mentality and bad things can happen when the mob rules. I also feel there should be a certain etiquette about when it is acceptable otherwise it cheapens the effect of rushing the court. Beating your heated rival is not enough but beating your heated rival while they are #1 on the last game of the season when your team is on the bubble would be acceptable.

So Northwestern hadn't beat Michigan State in 17 years, they have probably the worst basketball history out of any major conference program, and they took the #6 team in the country to the house. Is that enough to warrant storming the court? Also there are no barriers from the student section to the court and they are right on top of each end of the court, so it's not very difficult for them to storm.

Nope. Especially not early in the season when we don't know where Michigan State will end up.

The fact that there are no barriers preventing students from pouring onto the court isn't really relevant to whether it "should" be done or not. If the school wants to prevent it from happening, they can have security line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the court in front of the stands. Other schools have planned ahead to make sure they have enough security on hand to prevent it and the fine that goes with it. Also, you can have announcements in advance of the game warning students of disciplinary action for storming the court. So it's really as easy as the school allows it to be.
