Top Five College Football Recruiting Scandals in NCAA History
By Kristin Watt, Yahoo! Contributor Network
Jan 23, 6:31 pm EST

tweet0EmailPrintThe NCAA has strict rules governing recruitment activities of colleges and universities. Over the years, there have been some big scandals involving big schools and talented athletes.

Here are my picks for the top five recruitment scandals in the NCAA:

5. Auburn University

Auburn University was the focus of a scandal in 2010 when allegations were made that Cam Newton had been seeking money from two of the schools that were recruiting him. Allegedly, Newton's father asked for over $100,000 from each of the schools to secure Newton. Neither school paid. The NCAA investigated the allegations and found the Newton had no part in the scandal and, therefore, was still eligible to play.

4. University of Miami

The University of Miami, from 2002 to 2010, was allegedly offering recruits a variety of incentives that are definitely not allowed under NCAA rules. In addition to the typical violation of offering payments to recruits, Miami took it one step further. Miami allegedly offered prostitutes, and other items and services, to its recruits. The main individual involved in the activity was Nevin Shapiro. Shapiro was a booster with the school during those years. The school's investigation is still ongoing, but the school did decline to participate in the bowl games of 2011, and a number of students have been so far penalized.

3. University of Colorado

Unfortunately, the University of Miami was not the only school to resort to sex to try to get recruits in the door. The University of Colorado, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, used sex and alcohol to try to get recruits. Unfortunately, this combination led to allegations of rape in 2001. One of the more twisted aspects of the recruiting involved the use of female students for accompanying the players both on and off campus. The school was placed on probation from 2002 until 2004.

2. Clemson University

Clemson University has been the center of many scandals during its existence. The biggest one took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Though the individual violations may not have involved sex, drugs or rape, the sheer volume of violations gave the NCAA little choice in what had to be done. Starting in 1983, the program was placed on probation, given limits on its scholarships, prohibited from bowl games and restricted from televised games for two years. In 1990, after further recruitment violations, the program again faced suspension.

1. Southern Methodist University

The No. 1 spot has to go to Southern Methodist University. The school has the dubious distinction of being the only football program to receive the proverbial death penalty. In the 1970s and 1980s, the team blatantly paid players to join the team and to stay with the school. The 1987 season was cancelled and SMU could not field a team for 1988. The school was also prohibited from offering scholarships until 1991. SMU was given such harsh punishment because of the number of infractions and the fact that SMU was already on probation for other violations.

Any list without bama in the top 5 is ridiculous. No comments from the peanut gallery, you know who you are.

I think you could scratch Auburn off and place MS in number 5. Auburn was not a part of that scandal.

Auburn would never cheat. Would they?

Neither would bammer... we just weren't involved in that recruiting scandal that this article is claiming. I wasn't implying we haven't done things in the past. Any list without bammer is not credible.

I know Auburn hasn't dealt with major infractions RECENTLY. But if my athletic program was 3rd nationally and FIRST in the SEC with the most major infractions, I doubt I would be pointing my finger at other programs. AU is one of the most corrupt programs out there. And you have obviously gotten better at covering your tracks!

STFU wanker, you have been on probation for almost 20 straight years and should be getting it again.

Just another one of the bamma mantras that has no meaning

That was false the first 1,000 times it was posted over here.....and it still is. I guess the thought is if you repeat a lie long enough, it becomes true???

School Violations Probation Yrs Bowl Ban Yrs
Alabama 1989-90, 93 1995-96 2 1995 1
Alabama 1995-00 2002-06 5 02-03 2
Alabama 2005-07 2009-11 3 - 0

Not to mention that the textbook thing was the biggest screw job in history. A violation that involved no competitive advantage, and no wrongdoing by the school. Only a handful of athletes found a loophole in the system and abused it.

They should have made all athletes pay restitution, closed the loophole, and forgot about it. They didn't even follow past precendent when handing out the sanctions.

The NCAA is pitiful.

glad you keep that handy, throw in the repeat violator status and the 5 yr window per violation and you have been under the NCAAs thumb for a long ass time. Auburn, not so much, exactly 18 years without an infraction.

If you call a handful 200, then yes it was just a handful. Shaking head at the stupidity.

Nah, the biggest screwjob in history is just the fact bammer didnt go on probation for the first time until 1994. Anybody with an IQ over single digits knows bammer was cheating long before that. After all, even a bammer alumnus named William Bradford Huie claims bammers cesspool of a football program has been paying players since the 1920's. Anybody and everybody outside the bammer fan base also knows Logan Young had been paying bammer players for 40 years before he finally got caught by the NCAA

As for the original list of scandals, any list without Albert Means in the top 5 of NCAA scandals is an absolute joke. The kid or his high school coach was paid $150,000 to play in Tuscaloser. Bammer was hammered to the tune of losing 25 or 30 scholarships and being banned from a bowl game for two or three years. Logan Young was convicted in federal court in Memphis, Tennessee and sentenced to 6 months in prison.

Of course, if the real truth ever came out, bammer would have probably been looking at the death penalty, because there is not much doubt in my mind that ole Logan had been paying bammer recruits for a long time and bammer coaches knew all about it

Dude some of your own former players recently went on the record and admitted they got paid at Auburn. But they just told lies...right?

And one of bammers own boosters, t-town tom, was recently dumb enough to put hundreds of pictures on his own facebook page showing several bammer players driving new model suv's, going out to dinner with boosters, boosters attending players birthday party, players autographing stacks of jerseys inside a clothing store owned by a bammer booster, and players wearing 15 or 20 different suits and trying on some of those suits inside of the same clothing store. With further investigation, other people have also found rent-a-trent's momma living in 4 or 5 different houses, including at least 1 house connected to a bammer booster

I would consider that slightly more incriminating than the stupid shit you brought up considering the players you mentioned admitted they had no proof to back up their stories.

One of the Auburn players you mentioned also claimed that LSU was the very first college to offer him money while shorty saban was the coach at LSU. Those facts would surprise nobody outside the bammer fan base

Smack talk from a chicken fan? Has South Carolina accomplished anything of merit in the last 100 years of South Carolina football?

I will congratulate you guys on passing the 500 mark with your program for all time wins a couple of seasons ago. Bravo!

Have to with the misinformation from das boonker.

I will give you credit on one thing AUMont. The decade of the 2000s was the first decade since the 1940s that AU wasn't on probation.

Again, silly game to play when it makes your own school look just as bad - or worse.

We weren't in the 60s either. Nice deflection though, you tools work it. Do you think Alabama is currently guilty of any violations that could put them on probation? This should be good!

Typical bammer. Accusing somebody else of posting misinformation and then post misinformation himself. What you said about Auburn going on probation was not correct

So you admit that you were in the 1950s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s? Yep, that definitely vindicated you.

If you are talking about actually receiving some type of sanctions like forfeiting victories, losing scholarships, or a bowl or tv ban, Auburn and bammer have bath been on probation in 3 seperate decades and that is all.

So what, some was just piddly crap anyway. You said the 2000s was the only decade we didnt have a violation since the 40s. I know how you all love to talk about crap that happened before we were conceived. You are wrong again. Did you see that Clay Travis article on bammer fans? that was funny.

So? bammer has been on probation in the 1990's, 2000's, and 2010's...which is only 1 fewer decade than Auburn has been on probation. Not much of a difference except to bammers morons like you. Auburn's probation in the 1980's was minor at best and didnt carry any sanctions or penalties. It was a paper probation only
