So Charlie Baggett gets a buyout

I guess Joe's theory of all of these coaches jumping ship takes another hit. You don't get a buyout unless you're asked to leave.

If you were standing on the stern of the Titanic with the bow submerged, would someone have to ask you to leave??????.....brilliant.....5-7, bottom of the SEC.

Yep, it kind blows the "retirement" rumor out of the water. Really, do they really think UT fans are stupid enough to believe he is receiving $425K because he "retired"?? UT must be a great job, a great place to work. Work for UT 1.5 years, "retire" and collect $425k..

Not sure how I'd feel about that, either....but it'd be an upgrade for sure. Dooley was just such a catastrophic hire. Even Cuonzo's resume wasn't as thin as his.

Yep. DD was a 4-8 coach at La Tech. Now he's our 5-7 losing to KY coach. He was an awful hire. Oh well, he will be known as multimillionaire in Nov...

Harry Hiestand and Eric Russel were not retained because the line special teams were so bad. If you think they deserted own their own, then you are dumber than reTarder. And of course Lance Thompson had no intentions of leaving until he didn't land the DC job and got his feelings hurt. Please continue to show us all how ignorant you are.

Smart will not be the coach next season unless the wheels were to completely fall off, and that is not likely to happen. There is absolutely no way Sunseri or Graham would have left comfortable positions w/ highly respected coaches and uprooted their families if Hart had not assured them Dooley would be given at least 2 more seasons.

Who should we have hired?

Who is this mythical all-world coach that would have left his cushy spot in Oklahoma, Texas, California, Ohio, etc...to come coach a roster with bottom quarter of the SEC talent, an NCAA cloud hanging over the program, such natural recruiting disadvantages, and such delusional fans who believe we should win simply because "we are Tennessee"?

Which incredible coach was/is willing to move his family, spend twice as much time on recruiting as UF/LSU/UGA, and risk his career to take on this task?

Who should we have hired in basketball? Who's this coach that's going to come in and continue the unreal expectations that Pearl caused (gladly)? Who's going to take the job not knowing what the NCAA penalties would be? Where's this coach from the Big East that's going to leave his job for freakin Tennessee?

The position our football and basketball programs were in was not conducive to simply offering money for whoever we wanted.

I'd have questioned a big time coach's judgment, honestly, if he had taken either position.

Did you question saban's decision to leave the NFL to come to bama, which at the time was seen as a hopeless mess? No, Bama gave him $4mil/8 years guaranteed.

No, we went on the cheap, and as they say, we got what we paid for.

But either way, the above post is exactly the lack of ambition I'm talking about that exists at UT. We come up with reasons why we can't succeed over why we can.

We shouldn't sell ourselves short just to make excuses for a coach.

website. What has he done to earn or deserve it? The posters here seem to deny or ignore the obvious. The 5 and 7 season, the bonehead moves on the field (13 men vs LSU) the humiliating loss to KY, coaches leaving in mass, the lies about CCB, 5 decommits and etc.

I cannot remember (if ever) the last time UT did not sign a kid from Memphis! We seem to have missed the boat on Dawson, Robison and Robinson. Heard from several Memphis HS coaches that they never saw or heard from UT or DD.

45 Memphis/Shelby Co/Desoto Co kids on SEC rosters, and not one signed recruit from Memphis??? Even Bama signed a 6'6' 300lb lineman from St. Georges in Collierville. UT was never even in the picture for this kid.

Robison from CBHS wasn't even recruited until the last two weeks! A 4* LB! Just like like Jonathan Brown, another CBHS product two years ago! DD ignored him too. Brown signed with Illinois and as a Soph, made all Big Ten. Never a look from DD.

Bring on Kirby Smart!

Yeah, that's a great idea. Let's hire a coach w/ zero head coaching experience to put UT on the fast track back to the top of the SEC. And it's not 'love' CDD is receiving from us. It's the belief that this team in on the verge of turning the corner and that another coaching change at this point would derail that. Yes, UT finished 5-7 and the UK loss was bad. But anybody in their right mind at the beginning of the season new we were looking at possibly another 6-6 or 7-5 season, and that was with Hunter for the season and with Bray healthy the entire season. UT had a brutal schedule this season w/ virtually no senior leadership. And who cares if CDD hasn't recruited a few West TN kids? He's still put together some very good recruiting classes so far. His first class will jr upperclassmen this season. He's got a staff that should be able to both coach and recruit. In my mind, this season will be significantly better this season, and I think by 2014 will be really good. If UT is still hovering around the .500 mark and losing to UK, then it will be time to talk about a new coach. Right now it is simply silly, especially this fascination of yours with as assistant coach who has never been a HC before. Brilliant.

what I see is support for a coach who walked into the worst nightmare imaginable. That's not love. That's prudence

He had a great recruiting year. You should do your homework

Just like like Jonathan Brown, another CBHS product two years ago! DD ignored him too. Brown signed with Illinois and as a Soph, made all Big Ten. Never a look from DD.

Is that the same Jonathan Brown who committed to Illinois over a month before Derek Dooley was even hired? CDD had enough on his plate trying to keep the commits we already had (as well as pulling a 5* receiver), never mind trying to open the recruiting of a kid 3 weeks before signing day with little or no staff in place.

Robison from CBHS wasn't even recruited until the last two weeks! A 4* LB!

Until just about 2 weeks before NSD we were solid with our linebacker recruiting. We all know how abruptly that turned.

I cannot remember (if ever) the last time UT did not sign a kid from Memphis!

According to the Rivals lists, 2010 (put that one on Kiffin), 2008 and 2006.

45 Memphis/Shelby Co/Desoto Co kids on SEC rosters

There are 7 SEC schools closer to Memphis than UT, soon to be 8. It is just as easy for UT to recruit Pittsburgh, Tallahassee or St. Louis as far as proximity, and much closer for Memphis kids' families to see them play at other SEC schools than Tennessee.

I simply do not understand the love that DD receives from the fans on this website. What has he done to earn or deserve it?

I'm not saying (and I don't think anyone is) that Dooley is perfect, far from it. There is much room for improvement. What Dooley is at this time, however, is our coach, and most of us understand there is no quick fix for the mess he inherited. What CDD has earned at this point, IMO, is respect for working his ass off trying to rebuild this program with integrity, and what he deserves is the chance to see if he can turn the program around in the absence of the torch-and-pitchfork lynch mob that you, JoeVols and others are leading.

Joe, I have the ambition every weekend to take home a smokin, perfect 10 supermodel from the local watering hole. However, sometimes you have to have a bit more than simply ambition, as you say.

Saban inherited a totally different roster than he would have had he been considering TN in 2009. Alabama was not "seen as a hopeless mess" - they had won 10 games a couple years prior, and their roster is basically at the level where ours is right now, or will be in a year from now. You also assume there was a Saban clone out there, in 2008/2009.

So I can't really take the rest of your post seriously as I totally disagree with the premise on which it's based. We have tradition, yes. But there was a lot going against the program in 2008 and 2009. NCAA, following a legend, following a burnout, terrible roster, natural recruiting disadvantages. These are realities - or were, realities, Joe.
