One of these teams is guaranteed to play in a BCS bowl next year...

Big East MUST be stripped of the AQ status. One of these teams will bump a top 10 SEC team out of the BCS bowls next year. Incredible.

Simple answer. Cut back to an 11 game schedule, shorten season and have a 16 team playoff with an official champion.

But that is not going to happen IMO.

bobhawg, that looks like a good solution for determining a NC.

I imagine some schools would object to an 11 game regular season because of the loss of revenue.

I assume that teams would be rated using the current BCS system.

Would there still be conference championship games?

Would'nt current bowl-conference tie-ups have to be deleted?

Would there be eight designated bowls for the first playoff games?

The NC game would be th 15th game of the season for those two teams. That doesn't seem unreasonable since several teams now end up playing 14 games.

I suppose that the non-sixteen teams could go to various bowls at the same time as the 16 finals are playing out their 4 (or more) week schedule to the NC.

Just some thoughts--there will be other questions I feel certain.

Two groups have so far opposed the playoff system. The University Presidents and the bowl committees. I think the Presidents would come around eventually, but the bowl committees will fight hard and long to preserve the bowls as they are money and prestige for the cities. And I think the committees have the TV people on their side now.

And some schools would not want to give up that revenue from the 12th game.
But I think a division of the TV money among all schools would help that.

Picking the 16 teams should not be that hard, the NCAA basketball tournament was once a 16 team affair, then 32, etc. And I doubt if the 14th to 18th or 20th ranked teams would have any real complaint if left out.

With a 16 team format, that would take 4 weeks, of course and I think not distract from the student part of student athlete.

I suspect the conference championship game would be dropped.

But I personally do not see any playoff in the near future.

Even worse the Big 12. If the Big East losses their AQ, the Big 12 should be first. Fracking Big 12 voters voting UT and OU top 10 with 3 losses to try to pump up their dying conference. Four of the top half of the conference defected upon of seeing the writing on the wall. UT hasn't finished top 25 in years now.

Georgia

and the winner goes to the big game
