OT - Moving to Columbia

0 like 0 dislike

Just accepted a job as a professor at Mizzou, moving to Columbia for a March 1st start date. Anybody got any advice on where to look housing wise or things i need to check out upon arrival.

I currently live in NYC but before New York I was a visiting professor at Indiana University. Seems to me that Bloomington and Columbia are extremely similar.

As a side note I'm a crazy Buckeye grad and fan but I'm looking forward to supporting Tiger Athletics as well

Stay south of of I-70. That's where Mizzou is anyway.

Columbia is a far cry from NYC, but it's a nice college town and it's really growing. It's been a long time since I lived there, but I don't think it will be hard to figure out after a day of looking at properties with a realtor.

What do you teach/research?

You should enjoy Mizzou athletics. Just replace O-H-I-O with MIZ-ZOU. The venue isn't quite as big as the Horseshoe, but move to the SEC is bringing in some big-time matchups for football. On the basketball side, the Mizzou Arena is first class and so is this year's team. Next year it will be a very different team, but with a lot of talent and promise (and a weaker schedule in the SEC)

Born in Columbus and lived there for a time. Dad went to school there. Are you looking for rental or purchase? Do you have school age children or not concerned about school districts?

Congrats on getting a job at "The" University of Missouri. I have a buddy who is a buckeye fan who visited Columbia for work and loves coming back every year. Mizzou will just give u another school to root for other than the bucks. I have no advice on where to live as I lived n graduate housing while in law school.

Congrats on the position. I would generally look toward the south end of town for a place to live...probably south of the university. It also depends a bit on whether you have kids/family. If you have school aged children, you definitely want to be south.

Local legends are Shakespeare's Pizza (near campus), CJ's Wings (downtown), and Booche's (for burgers). People who move away and then come back for a visit are almost sure to schedule a pit stop at one of those places.

There are lots of good trails for walking/jogging/biking if you are into tha sort of thing, and the Rock Bridge state park is cool if you're into outdoorsy stuff.

I'm a PRT grad myself.. Tell Dr. Morgan I said hello... Very dry sense of humor. He came to Mizzou from K-Snake around 2002 I believe..
